MS Channel Weight Chart (kg/m): C-Channel Formula & Guide

MS channel (C-channel or U-channel) weight per metre is what converts a size specification into a real procurement number — for billing, transport planning, and BOQ accuracy. Fabricators use kg/m to estimate cutting, handling, welding, and total steel consumption before work starts.

The Formula

Weight (kg/m) = Cross-sectional Area (mm²) × 0.00785

Worked example for a 100×50×5mm channel: Area = 950mm² → Weight = 950 × 0.00785 = 7.4575 kg/m. For standard ISMC 75 (a commonly stocked size): 7.14 kg/m.

Total Weight (kg) = kg/m × total length in metres. Example: a channel at 11.7 kg/m for 48 metres required = 11.7 × 48 = 561.6 kg.

Common Channel Sizes & Applications

Size (H×B×t mm)Typical Use
50×25×4Racks, small frames
75×40×4Light structural supports
75 (ISMC)×40×6Heavier fabrication — ISMC 75 ≈ 7.14 kg/m
100×50×5Frames, trusses — ≈ 7.46 kg/m (worked example above)
100×50×6Common structural work
125×65×6Industrial supports
150×75×6Heavier frames
200×75×6High load members

Weight values shown are verified via the formula above for the two examples given; for other sizes, confirm exact kg/m from the IS 808 section table or our calculator before finalising an order — reference values are theoretical estimates and actual supplied weight may vary slightly by mill and tolerance.

How Builders Use This Chart

Contractors and fabricators check channel weight before ordering, especially on jobs involving multiple sizes — it lets procurement convert a cutting list into total tonnage for accurate quotation and freight planning, rather than discovering the correct total only at delivery. Steel rates change daily, but a section's kg/m stays the fixed reference point for every calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for MS channel weight per metre?

Weight (kg/m) = cross-sectional area (mm²) × 0.00785. For example, a 100×50×5mm channel works out to approximately 7.46 kg/m.

How do I calculate total channel weight for an order?

Multiply kg/m by the total length required in metres.

What is ISMC 75's standard weight?

Approximately 7.14 kg/m — a commonly stocked and referenced channel size.

Why does channel weight matter beyond billing?

It drives transport load planning and cutting/handling estimates in fabrication — getting it wrong causes both budget and logistics surprises.

Does actual channel weight always match the calculated value?

Approximately, but mill tolerance and section profile cause small variations — verify with the Mill Test Certificate for critical or billing-sensitive orders.
